Henry Ford Hospital Fellowships

Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship

Henry Ford Hospital’s Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery trains one fellow in the specialty of Colon and Rectal Surgery each year, under the guidance of five full time board certified (ABCRS) faculty members. Divisional members perform 5000 fiberoptic endoscopic procedures yearly which includes over 3000 colonoscopies. An average of 400 abdominal colorectal and 500 anorectal procedures are performed a year.

A large referral base provides the Colon and Rectal fellow with an opportunity to care for patients afflicted with a broad spectrum of pathology. All training in endoscopy is done within the Division and all inpatient surgery is performed at Henry Ford Hospital. Continuity of surgical care is emphasized.

The fellow has clinic responsibilities 2-3 days per week and spends much of this at one of four suburban satellite offices. Much of the fellow’s endoscopic and ambulatory surgery experience is gained at the satellites.

Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

This is a one-year experience which has ACGME approval. We have three positions available and participate in the match process. The activities take place in our 40-bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU). This unit provides care for approximately 3400 patients annually. These patients are from general surgery, trauma and acute care surgery, vascular surgery, transplant, cardiothoracic, orthopedics and other surgical specialties. Our philosophy is that the operating surgeon and surgical team provide care direction and the surgical critical care team provides minute to minute care. There are 3 teams composed of an SICU staff, fellow and residents. Fellows participate in administrative, teaching, patient care, and research. There are 10 surgeons with critical care expertise, 1 anesthesia, 2 pulmonary, 1 internal medicine and 1 Department of Emergency Medicine- based critical care physician on our staff. In addition, there is an opportunity for a second year of experience in acute care surgery. The Fellowship Director is Dr. Mary Margaret Brandt and her email address is: mbrandt1@hfhs.org; and the Associate Director is Dr. H. Mathilda Horst and her email address is: mhorst1@hfhs.org.

Vascular Surgery Fellowship

The Henry Ford Hospital Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program in the Division of Vascular Surgery has been an independent academic and clinical component of the Dept of Surgery for over 45 years. Our clinical interests include carotid and brachialcephalic arterial reconstructions, as well as complex aneurysm repair of the abdominal and thoracic aorta, lower extremity arterial reconstructions, and vein surgery. Moreover, invasive and non-invasive diagnosis modalities of all types as well as open and endovascular intervention are employed for patient benefits. The ACGME approved fellowship offers an extensive line of research opportunities, with as an established record of producing award winning papers. Teaching excellence through the vascular fellowship as well as integration into the general surgery program are featured as well. Positions are available through the NRMP match program. Personnel within the Division include the senior staff, fellows, house officers, nurse case managers, clinical vascular laboratory technical and clerical staff, office clerical staff and inpatient nursing staff.

Colon and Rectal Surgery conferences are held once a week and attendance at weekly Departmental Morbidity and Mortality and Grand Rounds is expected. A weekly Gastrointestinal Tumor Board is also attended by staff and the fellow.

Anorectal ultrasound is performed within the Division by faculty. Anorectal physiology is performed in the Division of Gastroenterology and is available to the Colon and Rectal Fellow. The Department of Neurology performs anorectal EMG studies and can be experienced by the fellow.

Outside rotations are not available, nor is a separate research year at present. The fellow is expected to submit a paper for the annual meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. The fellow is expected to attend the meeting and a travel stipend is provided. Presentations at approved meetings are also funded.
