Services | Colon
and Rectal Surgery
The Division of Colon
and Rectal Surgery evaluates and treats diseases
and conditions of the anus, rectum and colon,
including all aspects of inflammatory bowel disease. The Division consists of six full time senior staff surgeons as well as the
personnel required to administer care to our patients
at five outpatient facilities (Detroit Campus,
West Bloomfield, Lakeside, Fairlane, and the Pierson
Clinic-Grosse Pointe). Many of our operations
and procedures (e.g. colonoscopy, anorectal surgery)
are carried out within the outpatient clinics,
while more complex procedures are conducted within
the operating suites at Henry Ford Hospital, and
at facilities located in Grosse Pointe-- Cottage
Hospital.
The educational mission
of the Division is as follows: [1] define a core knowledge base
in colon and rectal surgery for the general surgery
resident; [2] impart this data base through didactic and case presentation
conferences, staff teaching rounds, staff-to-resident
interactions in the outpatient clinics, a variety
of communication media, and operative supervision;
[3] assist each resident in the process of developing
their personal character and professional demeanor
as defined by ones’ patients and peers; [4]
provide feedback (primarily through written and
oral examinations and monthly evaluations) to each
house officer regarding the extent to which these
goals were achieved.
The majority of the
resident learning opportunities take place during
direct patient interactions in the outpatient
clinics and operating rooms at the Detroit Campus. The Clinical interests of
the current Divisional staff are quite varied, and
include the medical and surgical management of
inflammatory bowel disease, complex anorectal conditions,
anorectal physiology, anorectal ultrasonography,
neoadjuvant treatment of rectal cancer, hereditary
cancer syndromes and sphincter saving procedures
for inflammatory bowel disease and rectal malignancies. For
the residents assigned to the Colon and Rectal
service, our Divisional staff conduct weekly didactic
sessions that are centered about the more common
disease processes. In addition, the Division
staff and residents actively participate in the
Gastrointestinal Tumor Board and a multidisciplinary
Gastrointestinal Case Presentation Conference,
each held weekly. Finally, whenever possible,
our residents are encouraged to participate in
the senior staff patient care interactions located
in the aforementioned satellite facilities.
The Division of Colon
and Rectal Surgery actively seek resident participation
in a variety of clinical research projects, under
the active supervision of senior staff. Current
interests include anorectal manifestations of HIV/AIDS
patients, pathologic and clinical prognostic features
of colon and rectal cancer, non-endoscopic management
of Ogilvie's syndrome and the effects of clinical
pathways on outcome in colon and rectal surgery patients. |
