Services | Critical Care

Our Surgical Intensive Care unit with its state of the art facilities was opened in 1998 and with its 40 beds is one of the largest units in the country. Perioperative care is provided by a multi-professional team of nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, case managers, surgeons and intensivists who believe in achieving excellence in-patient care. Our teaching program provides experience for Residents from many specialties. These Residents rotate 1 or 2 months on one of three intensivist lead teams that collaborate with the operating surgeon to provide the right care. From bedside presentations and patient management to bedside procedures and communication skills, residents add to their fund of knowledge and skill sets. Evidence based protocols and guidelines help provide structure. Formal lectures, bedside teaching, electronic media enrich the academics. All residents are required to complete the FCCS (Fundamentals of Critical Care Support) course of the Society of Critical Care Medicine during their first rotation in the unit.

Critical Care Fellowships

The fellowship in Surgical Critical Care offers three positions annually. This fellowship year provides advanced experience with the practice of surgical critical care, unit management, and scholarly activity. Expertise at bedside procedures is obtained. The surgical critical care experience at the fellow level provides the opportunity to lead the critical care team and teach residents. Interaction with intensvists in surgery, medicine, and anesthesia allows the fellow to compare different approaches to patient care.
