Plastic
and Reconstructive Surgery |
The
Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
provides a complete product line of plastic/reconstructive/hand
surgery to the Detroit Campus, two major satellites
(Henry Ford Medical Centers at Fairlane and at
West Bloomfield), and two minor satellites (Woodhaven
and Pierson-Grosse Pointe). The
Detroit Campus is the primary site for inpatient, administrative,
teaching and research functions within the Division. The
vast majority of major inpatient surgical procedures
are performed at the Detroit Campus, the remainder
completed at either Cottage Hospital (Grosse Pointe)
or Wyandotte Hospital (southern Wayne County). All
of our Plastic Surgery staff members spend a good
deal of time at the Detroit Campus. On the
other hand, the ambulatory surgery facilities at
Fairlane and West Bloomfield allow all of our staff
surgeons the opportunity to perform the majority
of outpatient procedures that require general anesthesia,
while the Detroit Campus provides a site for about
25% these services. Of note, our Fairlane facility
is home to about one-half of the outpatient care; its
minor surgery rooms are equipped with an image
intensifying x-ray machine, liposuction and a resurfacing
laser.
The Division of Plastic
Surgery is an integral part of the Department of
Surgery resident education program. Our staff surgeons provide the fundamental
principles of Plastic Surgery to our residents-in-training
through the many clinical teaching opportunities
available at the Detroit campus. Residents
are expected to obtain a working knowledge of the
management of problem wounds, facial and hand injuries,
and basic repair and reconstruction techniques
such as skin grafts and flaps. We have found
that the interaction among the residents who rotate
on our service from a variety of disciplines (e.g.
General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology,
Oral Surgery, and Emergency Medicine) fosters a
collegial, learning atmosphere. We participate
in the General Surgery house staff and medical
student lecture series. Moreover, every month,
our staff surgeons conduct a detailed hand dissection
for the benefit of all rotating residents, the
emphasis of which is placed upon gaining an understanding
of the anatomic basis of hand operations. Finally,
the Division sponsors a basic microsurgery course,
which is attended by residents from several specialties,
including those in the first two years of their
General Surgery training.
Each day, the residents
round together with the staff Plastic Surgeons
at Henry Ford Hospital, and then accompany
various staff members to participate in our Detroit
Campus clinic or in the operating room. Other
learning opportunities include visits to the Fairlane
ambulatory surgery facility. A monthly multi-disciplinary
Cleft Palate Clinic is attended by all residents
on the service. A busy wound care team is available
to provide you with cutting edge techniques to manage
the more perplexing wound healing problems. A
basic wound healing laboratory supports the wound
healing team. | |
